There is a misconception that The Miss Fits are the only women who compete from our gym, or that we are synonymous with the GYM Laird powerlifting team. While its true, the first gym team was solely Miss Fits, our current team has grown to include several other amazing ladies. We always strive to encourage women to strength train and we’re beyond excited if they get the bug to compete. We have introduced you to a few of our teammates over the last few months and this time we are proud to spotlight Susan.
Susan is not new to competing but she has improved her technique since she started training with Coach, and we look forward to seeing her kill it on the platform this June. Her PRS are 200 squat and 240 deadlift. She has not previously competed in bench. Below is Susan’s bio in her own words.
Favorite quote: You’re never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream ~ C.L. Lewis
Lifting weights makes you stronger and healthier physically, but more importantly, mentally strengthens you by improving your confidence and outlook on life. I started my journey while in my mid 40’s and it is the best thing that ever happened to me! By the age of 50, I changed careers from working in Graphic Arts at a hospital to working as a personal trainer. I wanted to help others who needed to make positive changes in their lives through fitness just as I was in my own life.
I first started competing in powerlifting 5 years ago, but it wasn’t until I found the Miss Fits and Jim Laird that I truly felt at home. Meeting and training with others who enjoy the benefits of powerlifting! Our coach Jim Laird is encouraging with every single lift I make and has taught me that age is just number. Done properly, I can lift forever!
My favorite lift is the deadlift, but with the support of my team, I’m learning to love the bench press!
