Getting Started

Our question this week comes from Barbara, who is a triathlete interested in training in powerlifting and eventually competing.  She is looking for a beginner’s “training guide” for a 12-week program to help her reach her goal of a 500lb total in a powerlifting competition.  So I asked our coach, Jim, what’s the best way to get started? As always, first and foremost, we recommend that you find a knowledgeable trainer or at least a gym that has the right equipment and supports smart and safe lifting.  Even well-seasoned athletes can use help with proper form and movement, as powerlifting has different demands than many other sports/activities.  Proper form is crucial.

Jim’s go-to plan for beginner powerlifters is Jim Wendler’s 5/3/1.  This is the platform that we all trained with for our first competition.

You can read all about Jim Wendler and his training programs at  He specifically addresses the beginner program here.

Good luck to you Barbara and to any others that may use this program to get started! As always, we would love to hear from any of you that may have questions/comments.  Feel free to email us at
